Anniversary Weekend with the Traditional Old Town Festival

It’s the highlight of the anniversary year in Radolfzell: On Saturday, September 12, and Sunday, September 13, 2026, the big anniversary weekend will take place in downtown Radolfzell and along the lakefront. The date was chosen deliberately—because September 13 is historically documented as the anniversary of the death of the city’s founder, Bishop Radolt of Verona.

Anniversary Saturday – 48th Radolfzell Old Town Festival

On September 12, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Radolfzell’s downtown will once again be transformed into a large festival area, serving as a gathering place for locals, guests, and visitors from across the region. For nearly 50 years, clubs, volunteers, restaurant owners, merchants, and cultural organizers have been working together to ensure the festival’s success.

Amid historic alleyways, the market square, and the lakeshore, visitors can enjoy music, art, culinary delights, entertainment, and historical attractions for the whole family. Throughout the day, a varied music program sets the mood on several stages and in various squares—ranging from brass band music, soul, and Latin to jazz and rock, as well as DJ sets featuring DJ Dennis Dorn on the market square stage.

There are also plenty of hands-on activities for children and teens, including acrobatic shows, bounce houses, a children’s carousel, water games organized by the youth fire department, the fire department’s traditional duck race on Kirchgasse, and a puppet show by the Sparkassen Puppet Theater on Gerberplatz. The children’s flea market on Fürstenbergstraße and Obertorstraße and the flea market on Teggingerstraße, along with arts and crafts, raffles, and store promotions, invite you to browse and discover. Various clubs and businesses from Radolfzell and the surrounding region will also be showcasing their offerings on Sankt-Johannis-Straße.

In this anniversary year, historical themes also play a special role: “time islands,” historical parades, a fashion show, and a medieval encampment featuring crafts and glimpses into life in times past bring Radolfzell’s history to life.

Anniversary Sunday—Festive Church Service and a Colorful Program

The festival Sunday, September 13, is all about history and faith. The day begins festively with a special Mass at 9:15 a.m. in the Cathedral of Our Lady. From 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., visitors can enjoy a varied program in the city center. Free guided tours of the city, the cathedral, and the city museum offer fascinating insights into Radolfzell’s history. The museum will open its doors with free admission, and the cathedral tower will also be open. On the market square, a colorful program featuring music, poetry, and dance will provide entertainment.

Gala Concert by the Münster Wind Ensemble and Soloists

To conclude the anniversary weekend, the Münsterbauverein is hosting a spectacular gala concert featuring ULF and the Münsterbläser on Sunday, September 13, at 7:00 p.m. in the Münster. Two world-class soloists have been secured for this concert: trombonist Uwe Schrodi, a native of Markelfingen, and trumpeter Reinhold Friedrich. With the participation of Reinhold Friedrich, one of the world’s leading trumpet virtuosos of our time, this concert promises to be a truly special musical treat. The program ranges from Hermann von der Reichenau to Johann Sebastian Bach and Richard Strauss. This special concert, held on the anniversary of the death of St. Radolt, the town’s founder, is organized by the Radolfzell Cathedral Building Association. Like this! Or differently? 1200 years of Radolfzell – Exhibition Villa Bosch

In the 1200 years of its history, Radolfzell has reinvented itself time and again – through
decisions that have shaped its community, opened up new paths and closed others.

To mark the anniversary, the exhibition looks back at history and ahead to the future.
What historical decisions have shaped Radolfzell and could things have turned out differently
? What challenges does the city of today face and what paths will it
take?

Under the title “Like this! Or different? 1200 years of Radolfzell”, the exhibition focuses on such
decisions in order to highlight possible pasts and possible futures. The result is
a unique exhibition experience that conveys knowledge, encourages reflection and promotes
social dialog.

The “Milchwerk” or the “Tanke”, the “Rathaus” or the “See” – in the rooms of the Villa Bosch
, visitors enter familiar places and rediscover them in surprising ways. What
would happen if Radolfzell had become a university town? What if the town had once again
become the site of a barracks? And what if the sinking lake level created a land connection
to Reichenau?


To the next 1200 years

The conclusion and highlight of the exhibition is a time capsule. For centuries,
people have been preserving messages for posterity, hidden in foundation stones, church spires or in
attics. They contain things of such great importance that they are intended to stand the test of time and
may only be opened in the distant future.

The exhibition takes up this tradition and poses the question: What should Radolfzell leave behind for the future
? Which memories, experiences and hopes are worth preserving for future
generations?

At the interactive stations of the exhibition, visitors can contribute their own thoughts and wishes in a playful way
and actively participate in developing a vision for Radolfzell at
– at the end, they decide for themselves what should be included in the time capsule and preserved until the next anniversary at

City and universities

The exhibition is the result of a collaboration between the Radolfzell Cultural Office, the University of
Konstanz and the HTWG Konstanz. In the winter semester 2025/26, students of
History, Architecture and Communication Design conceived the exhibition and implemented it in the
summer semester.

The exhibition is the seventh project of the interdisciplinary cooperation “Mediale
Ausstellungsgestaltung”, which has repeatedly set innovative accents and has received many awards
.

The exhibition opens on July 31, 2026 in the Villa Bosch and can be seen until November 15.
The exhibition will conclude with the handover of the sealed time capsule containing the hopes and
visions of the people of Radolfzell – it will be opened at the next 1200th anniversary in 3226!

Villa Bosch is open Wednesday through Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Villa Bosch is closed on Monday and Tuesday!

Ringing Minster

To celebrate the end of the anniversary year, the “Klingende Münster” invites you to an evening full of music, community and glittering lights. In the poetically illuminated Minster of Our Lady, musicians from the State University of Music Trossingen and the Radolfzell Music School will trace the 1,200-year history of Radolfzell in a variety of tonal colors.

Together they create a varied musical mosaic that takes listeners on an atmospheric journey through time.

The program will be performed twice on 12 December – at 5.30 pm and 7.30 pm.

Between the two concerts, at 6.45 pm, a special communal experience will take place on the market square (no admission charge):
After the welcome by Lord Mayor Simon Gröger, all those present will transform into a large choir under the direction of Pia Löb (cantor of the Christuskirche) and sing Advent carols together. Accompanied by a brass ensemble made up of the brass choir of the Christuskirche and the Radolfzell youth brass orchestra under the direction of Norbert Steiner and Kuno Rauch, this creates a moment of solidarity and a musical symbol of the togetherness that makes Radolfzell so vibrant.

1st Radolfzell Film Festival

As part of the city’s anniversary celebrations and in collaboration with filmmakers Teresa Renn and Patrick Merkle, as well as Ana Baumgart and Daniel Franz from KFZ – Kunst für Zukunft, the 1st Film Festival is taking place in Radolfzell.

For three days, it’s all about big emotions and gripping stories on the big screen. To make this happen, the KFZ – Kunst für Zukunft (Friedrich-Werber-Str. 13+15 in Radolfzell) will be transformed into an unconventional movie theater.
Under the theme “F_YOU_TURE,” a total of eight feature films and documentaries will be screened. The films focus on the stories of children, teenagers, and young adults—with all their diverse life experiences, thoughts, and visions for the future. The organizer’s goal is to provide young people with a platform for creative expression.

The film screenings will be accompanied by Q&As with filmmakers, who will introduce their films in person. Panel discussions, readings, and a film workshop for young people round out the festival’s diverse program.
