Radolfzell on Lake Constance as a bridge between today and yesterday

Radolfzellon Lake Constance can look back on over 1,200 years of history, which began with its foundation in 826. The town was founded by Bishop Radolt of Verona, whose name is still reflected in the town’s name today. The origins of the settlement lay on a hill on the northern shore of Lake Zell, where simple fishermen’s huts already stood. Bishop Radolt had a church and several buildings erected there and laid the foundation stone for the later town with his “Ratoldescella”.

Radolfzell soon developed into an important town on the lake. The population grew steadily and the town became increasingly important. Radolfzell’s early development into a well-known place of pilgrimage is particularly noteworthy. This was mainly due to the transfer of relics by Bishop Radolt, who had the bones of Saints Theopont and Senesius brought to Radolfzell. Saint Zeno was added later. This gave rise to the Hausherrenfest, which is still the town’s biggest festival today.

An important milestone in the town’s history was the granting of the town charter in 1267, which officially elevated Radolfzell to the status of a town and ushered in an economic and social boom. The favorable location on the lake promoted trade and markets – Radolfzell became a central hub for goods and people from the region.

In the 13th century, the town came into the possession of the House of Habsburg and became part of the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1810. A new era dawned with the start of industrialization in the 19th century: The opening of the Basel-Radolfzell-Constance railroad line in 1863 gave the town a strong economic boost. The first factories were built on the outskirts of the town, and Radolfzell developed from a small market town into an important industrial and commercial location. At the same time, the town gradually grew beyond its historic walls.

Radolfzell has continued to develop steadily to this day. In addition to industry, tourism now also plays a central role. The town has developed into a popular resort with modern spa facilities, a wide range of offers for guests and residents and a well-developed infrastructure. Despite all the changes, Radolfzell has retained its historical charm – numerous old buildings still bear witness to its long history.

Today, Radolfzell stands for a successful combination of history and modernity – as a lively, liveable town on Lake Constance.
